General questions

Is the use of RADAR4KIT free of charge?

Yes, use by KIT members is free of charge.

Who can upload data to RADAR4KIT?

To upload research data, a workspace (for KIT institutes, working groups or project groups) must first be set up by the KIT library. Please contact our team directly (see below).

You will be assigned curator or subcurator rights within the workspace. Subcurator rights can also be set up for persons who do not belong to KIT.

To log in, you need a valid KIT employee account or another institutional account. Alternatively, a RADAR user account can be registered.

How long is the data stored?

RADAR4KIT enables the permanent and unaltered storage of data packages for a defined period of time (“retention period”). For archived data, the curator can choose between a retention period of 5, 10 or 15 years. The actual storage period for archived data packages may be shorter if the RADAR4KIT service is discontinued before the retention period expires. KIT guarantees an actual retention period of at least 10 years for archived data.

In principle, published data is stored indefinitely. For published data an actual retention period of at least 25 years is guaranteed.

Uploading and publishing

How can I upload data?

After successfully logging in, you will see the workspace(s) for which you have curator or subcurator rights. To upload data, select the “Create dataset” button on the right-hand side of the workspace.

If you do not see a workspace after logging in, either a workspace has not yet been set up or you have not yet been assigned curator or subcurator rights. Please contact us.

In addition to the upload function in the web browser, data can also be uploaded with WebDAV support or via the RADAR API. These two options are particularly suitable for uploading large amounts of data.

What options are there for uploading data?

You have the following options for uploading data:

  1. Via the RADAR4KIT user interface in the web browser
This is the standard upload option, recommended for data sizes up to a maximum of 50 GB.
  2. Via WebDAV
For flexible data upload, upload of individual files and entire directories. Recommended for large amounts of data. Detailed instructions can be found on the RADAR support pages in the quickstart guide.
  3. Via the RADAR-API
For automatic data upload, recommended for large or very large files. Access via API is set up on request.
  4. GitHub import
For projects based on continuous software development or where data is generated and managed with software support. Further information can be found on the RADAR support pages. Access is set up on request.
What is the maximum file size per dataset?

The archive system limits the maximum size per dataset to 600 GB. However, for easier reuse, it is advisable not to exceed a file size of 50 to 100 GB per dataset.

Very large amounts of data can be divided into multiple datasets and linked to each other. A DOI is generated for each data record. If you have a large number of files, they can be grouped logically, e.g. in ZIP files or other archive formats.

For very large amounts of data, uploading via the RADAR API or WebDAV is recommended. Please contact us.

Can datasets be uploaded automatically?

Yes, automatic data transfer is possible via the RADAR API. A registered RADAR user account is required to set up access. Only one API access should be used per RADAR4KIT workspace.
If you are interested, please contact us.

Can data be archived via RADAR4KIT but not published?

Yes. You can decide for yourself whether your data should be published or archived.
If the data is archived, it is only accessible to members of the respective RADAR4KIT workspace – unless the data is archived “publicly”, in which case the data package is freely available on the RADAR4KIT portal.

Can archived datasets be published later?

No, unfortunately, this is not currently possible. You will need to upload and publish the data again.

Is it possible to upload a new version of a previously published dataset (so called "versioning")?

No, unfortunately not currently. You must create a new dataset with a new DOI, and you can link both datasets together. It is a good idea to add a corresponding note to the title, e.g., "(New Version / Version 2)."
Versioning functionality is planned to be enabled in one of the upcoming software releases.

Reuse data

Is it possible to download only individual files from a data package?

No, currently only the entire data package can be downloaded. However, downloading single files is planned to be enabled in a future software release.

Can research data published in RADAR4KIT be imported into KITopen?

Yes. After logging into KITopen Depositing & Publishing, you will find an import button on the "My KITopen" page in the "KITopen RDM" panel.
