OPEN ACCESS MEANS CC BY
Open licenses are an important component of Open Access. They enable the subsequent use of published articles and data and clarify the conditions under which this is possible. The selection of the license for Open Access publications is therefore crucial. Creative Commons licenses are most widely used.
The DEAL consortium, which negotiated the framework agreements with Wiley, Springer and Elsevier, recommends the use of the Creative Commons license “CC BY” whenever it is available under the motto “OPEN ACCESS MEANS CC BY”. The KIT Library also agrees with this recommendation.
The license type of non-commercial licenses (NC licenses, CC BY-NC) prevents reuse and redistribution according to the basic principles of open access and often leads to publishers securing exclusive commercial rights in order to resell content to AI providers, for example.
