Research Data Management Elaborated with Tools and Services at KIT [ON-SITE WORKSHOP]

Dienstag, 27. Juni 2023, 10:00-17:00
Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
Bldg. 30.50/30.51, KIT-Bibliothek Süd, 3. OG Neubau, Vortragssaal/Lecture Hall (https://www.bibliothek.kit.edu/img/PlaeneBIB-S/BIB-S-OG3-A4-Vortragssaal-Lecture-Hall.pdf)

The information event will be held in English.

Parallel to the professional competences (research phase), the planning of research projects (pre-research phase) and the handling and publication (post-research phase) of research results (including research data) are among the integral key competences of researchers. In all phases, the competent use of research data management (RDM) proves essential for the dissemination of research results and thus for a career in science and research. Effective data management can help optimise research outputs, increase the impact of your research and support open scientific research.

This event will provide you with basic RDM skills and help you make informed decisions about how to manage your research data, regardless of your discipline or academic field. You will receive in-depth training on best practices for documenting, organising, sharing and archiving your research data in accordance with the FAIR data principles, including personal data and working in the context of international collaboration. As the focus of the training is on the practical application of RDM, you will learn how to create or improve data management plans for your own research projects. Furthermore, as part of the event, you learn about the cross-disciplinary RDM services at KIT. Along the research data life cycle, tools such as Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO), Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data) and the generic research data repository RADAR4KIT as well as some short exercises complete the introduction. After completing this event, you will be better able to manage your data throughout the research data lifecycle, from project planning to completion.

Learning blocks include:

Block 1: Basic Principles and Legal Aspects of RDM

  • Acknowledging the Awareness of RDM with live examples
  • Understanding the basic principles of RDM and of the Research Data Life Cycle
  • Learning about FAIR data and how to make your data FAIR
  • Getting a hang of file organization and data documentation techniques
  • Learning where and how to store research data
  • Grasping the main important RDM policies (KIT, Funders)
  • Becoming aware of legal aspects concerning research data (data protection, copyright)

Block 2: Documentation, Metadata and ELNs

  • Creating a research data management plan with RDMO (hands-on)
  • Figuring out metadata through LEGO play
  • Getting familiarized with different ELNs and how to use them (chemotion, kadi4mat, LEGO demonstration)

Block 3: Storing and Publishing data

  • Finding discipline specific repositories (re3data)
  • Mastering how to publish and cite research data
  • Comprehending how to use KITOpen and RADAR4KIT (live demonstration)

This Workshopt is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members.

The Workshop will be held in English.
